چکیده
Were the technique outlined in this neat little manual meticulously followed, a very high proportion of instructive anatomical specimens would be produced. Essentially it presents the method of Ghon which pursues a middle course between the en bloc dissections of Rokitansky and the piecemeal method of Virchow. The elementary surgical principle that nothing may be cut before it is seen is employed and the organs are prepared in groups with their appurtenant vessels and nodes. Particularly commendable is the author's insistence on careful examination of the breast tissue, a procedure too often neglected. There is a valuable appendix comprised of the necropsy protocols of an adult and of an infant. Since the book is designed primarily for the beginner who, it may be presumed, has not yet learned to be flexible to the exigencies of the case, more emphasis might have been placed on desirable deviations from the routine, such as preserving the continuity of the aorta in cases of congenital heart disease. Also the necessity for making a much more thorough examination of the lungs than is ordinarily done is insufficiently emphasized. A discussion of instruments and of the methods of preserving gross material in its pristine colors in the manner for which the author himself is famous, would not have been amiss. Valuable, too, would have been a presentation of standards for extensive and accurate anthropometry, and of the procedures to be followed in medicolegal cases. Minor errors, e.g., "their" for "there" on p. 71, are few. It may be objected that the "anatomic diagnosis" of Case I contains a statement of a process ("thrombosis of left renal artery") rather than of a morphological finding. Although the text is not illustrated, it is sufficiently clear and concise to be readily followed. AVERILL A. LIEBOW.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring in southern Ontario health care clinics: bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator use.
OBJECTIVE To determine the proportion of public-location out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) that occur in health care clinics and to describe bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use during these episodes. DESIGN Our study was a retrospective cohort study of 679 nontraumatic OHCAs recorded in the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Epistr...
متن کاملComputed tomographic evaluation of the normal cardiac anatomy.
Accurate interpretation of cardiac computed tomography requires fundamental knowledge of the normal cardiac anatomy and its common variations. This article reviews the normal anatomy of the coronary arteries, cardiac chambers, and cardiac valves.
متن کاملNoninvasive monitoring cardiac output using partial CO(2) rebreathing.
This article reviews use of partial carbon dioxide rebreathing devices to determine cardiac output and their application for hemodynamic monitoring in the ICU and operating room. The primary focus is on the NICO monitoring device. Compared with conventional cardiac output methods, these techniques are noninvasive, easily automated, and provide real-time and continuous cardiac output monitoring....
متن کاملOut-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Myocardial disease and death from cardiac arrest remain significant public health problems. Sudden death events and out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) are encountered frequently by emergency medical services. Despite more than 30 years of research, survival rates remain extremely low. This article reviews access and presentations, demographics, OHCA outcomes, and response systems and proces...
متن کاملCardiac transplantation.
Cardiac transplantation is a proven, accepted mode of therapy for selected patients with end-stage heart failure, but the inadequate number of suitable donor hearts available ultimately limits its application. This chapter reviews adult cardiac transplantation, with an emphasis on the anesthetic considerations of the heart transplant operation itself.
متن کاملQuality, patient safety, and the cardiac surgical team.
After more than a decade of attention, the risks inherent in cardiac surgery have been well documented, but examples of effective interventions to reduce this risk remain scarce. The need is great, because the patient population is vulnerable and the potential consequences of poor outcomes are ever present and significant. This article reviews a decade of discussion surrounding quality and safe...
